 | Solid State Electrodes | | |
| Solid state electrodes are available as both single half-cells or as combination electrodes complete with reference electrode. These electrodes incorporate a solid sensing surface made of compressed silver halides, or solid crystalline material. Hanna’s offering includes sensors for the determination of bromide, cadmium, chloride, cupric, cyanide, fluoride, iodide, lead and silver ions. Solid body construction is rugged for long life.
Theory: A solid state electrode develops a voltage due to ion-exchange occurring between the sample and the inorganic membrane. An equilibrium mechanism occurs due to the very limited solubility of the membrane material in the sample. |
 | Liquid Membrane Electrodes | | |
| Liquid membrane electrodes are available as single half-cells or as combination electrodes complete with reference electrode. The sensing surfaces of these electrodes are comprised of a homogeneous polymer matrix containing organic ion-exchangers selective for the determined ion. These sensors incorporate easily replaceable membrane modules and are available for measurements of nitrate, potassium and calcium.
Theory: The potassium electrode was one of the earliest liquid membrane sensors developed of this type. The membrane is usually in the form of a thin disc of pvc impregnated with the antibiotic valinomycin. The exchanger, also known an ionophore, is a ring structure that fits potassium ions inside like a lock and key. This type of membrane is not as rugged as the solid state type so they are designed for easy replacement of the sensing module. |
 | Gas Sensors | | |
| Gas sensors are combinatizon electrodes that detect dissolved gases in a solution. No external reference is required for these electrodes. The sensing element is separated from the sample solution by a gas permeable membrane. Hanna’s offering includes the hi 4101 ammonia electrode and the hi 4105 carbon dioxide electrode.
Theory: A gas sensor works due to the partial pressure of the measured gas in solution. The dissolved gas in the sample diffuses into the membrane and changes the ph in a thin film of unbuffered electrolyte on the surface of the internal ph sensor. Diffusion continues until the partial pressure of the sample and the thin film is the same. The ph change is proportional to the dissolved gas in the sample. |
 | Reference And Combination Electrodes | | |
| Hanna’s reference electrode is used with our half-cell ise sensors to provide accurate and repeatable measurements. Hanna’s combination electrodes incorporate the measuring electrode with the reference making them ideal for field measurements. |
 | Combination Electrodes | | |
| Combination electrodes include a sensor and reference electrode in a single electrode body. Our combination ion selective electrodes provide the same selectivity and response as our ise half- cells, but include our superior double junction reference into the same electrode body. Combination solid state electrodes have a built in solid state sensor and quick refillable reference electrode. Our liquid membrane and fluoride combination electrodes have replaceable module construction and the hanna double junction reference stability. |
 | HANNA ISE Standards | | |
| Our wide selection of HANNA ISE standards are made and bottled in our own state-of-the-art solutions facility. ISE standards are required for direct and incremental measurement techniques and are available with certificate of analysis.
|
 | Ionic Strength Adjusters (ISA) | | |

 | Precision Instruments For Lab And Field Applications. | | |
| Conductivity is a variable that is monitored in many fields such as the chemical industry and agriculture. Conductivity is a measurement of the amount of dissolved salts in a given liquid and is inversely proportional to resistance.
With conventional meters, conductivity is obtained by applying a voltage across two probes and measuring the conductance of the solution. Solutions with a high conductivity, produce a higher current. In order to keep a low current in a highly conductive solution, you would have to reduce the surface area of the probe or increase the distance between the poles. The dual-sensor method is suitable for solutions with low-medium conductivity. For this reason, different probes must be used for different ranges.
Only the 4-ring method can measure multiple ranges with a single meter and a single probe. The advantages of four-ring potentiometric method over the two-pole (amperometric) method are numerous, including a linear reading over a wide range, no polarization, no need for thorough cleaning, etc. HANNA was the world's first manufacturer to introduce the four-ring or potentiometric method of conductivity measurement with portable and bench meters.
HANNA offers a wide range of Potentiometric (4-ring) and Amperometric (two-pole) meters. You have a choice of multiple meters for TDS, conductivity and pH, as well as specific instruments made for boilers and agriculture. |

| 4 Parameters in one professional instrument
Hi 2300 performs ec, tds (total dissolved solids), percentage of nacl and °c measurements. The auto-ranging feature for ec and tds measurements sets the highest possible resolution automatically.
All measurements can be temperature compensated at 20 or 25°c. The automatic temperature compensation (atc) can also be disabled for measuring the actual conductivity and the compensation coefficient can be user selected. The stability indicator located on the lcd ensures accuracy.
Conductivity readings are performed by applying an alternate current to the 4-ring probe, which creates a variable voltage directy proportional to conductivity. the glp feature allows users to store and recall data about system status.
To communicate with the pc use the (optional) hi 92000 communication software. This software provides an exclusive online guide of all the commands available and allows data printing, plotting and exporting.
Auto-ranging The ec and tds scales are autoranging. The meter automatically sets the scale with the highest possible resolution.
Temperature compensation
Three options of compensating temperature are available:
automatic (atc): the ec probe has a built-in temperature sensor which is used to automatically compensate the ec/tds reading (from -9. 9°c to 120. 0°c), using the selected reference temperature.
Manual (MTC): the temperature value, shown on the secondary lcd, can be manually set with the arrow keys. The compensation is referenced at the selected temperature. The “°c” tag blinks when this option is active.
No compensation (NOTC): the temperature value shown on the secondary lcd is not taken into account. The reading displayed on the primary lcd is the actual ec or tds value. The “°c” tag blinks when this option is active.

 | Water Hardness/Softness Tester | | |
| The pNa is an easy-to-use and inexpensive instrument for determining water hardness/softness. The hardness of water is due to the presence of magnesium and calcium. These make washing difficult, waste soap and create unpleasant scum and scale deposits. With a zeolite system, the calcium and magnesium ions are substituted on a one-to-one basis with sodium ions from a conditioning resin. Once all the sodium ions are exhausted, the resin has to be regenerated. This is currently determined by estimating the volume of water that goes through the softener and guessing when to change the resin!
Even though this may work in some cases, it fails in most since the sodium content of feed water is never constant. As a result, either the resin is regenerated too early and wastes resources, or too late, risking damage due to scaling. With the pNa, you can measure the sodium content of feed water and exit water in seconds. When the resin is exhausted of sodium, there will be no exchange and the pNa will read the same value at the two ends. Only then should the resin be changed. pNa takes guess work out of resin regeneration!

 | Free And Total Sulfur Dioxide | | |
| An important reason for adding SO2 is to avoid oxidation. When there is oxygen around, SO2 itself becomes oxidized before phenol compounds in the wine, and so acts as an oxygen scavenger. Also, SO2 suppresses the activity of enzymes that cause browning and other problems.
What is really protecting your wine is molecular SO2. When you add SO2, depending of circumstances, some of it immediately becomes bound. The relationship between the amount of SO2 and amount of SO2 remaining free is complex. It is clear, however, that is largely governed by the total SO2 content of the wine. The rate of binding decreases as the free SO2 concentration increases. The exact relationship between free and bound (total-free) SO2 will vary from wine to wine. Below 30-60 ppm, 33% to 50% of SO2 addition becomes bounded. What remains is called “free” and it is divided in two parts. The larger, and relatively ineffective free part is “bisulphite” (HSO³). The smaller part of the free is the active molecular. The amount of molecular SO2 in your wine
depends both on the level of free SO2 present as well as pH. For instance, at pH 3.2, the amount of the free SO2 for 0.8 ppm molecular SO2 is 22 ppm. At pH 3.5, you will need 43 ppm free - essentially double.
In most situations, 0.8 pp, molecular SO2 during bulk storage and at bottling will provide you with adequate protection from oxidation and bacterial action. This includes prevention of malolactic bacteria as well. It is important to remember that the amount of free SO2 in the wine depends on three things: how much is added, how much was present before the addition and how much of your addition promptly becomes bound.
The level at which molecular SO2 can be detected by the human senses is about 2.0 ppm. This is also the level which is needed for maximum protection of your wine. This is particularly true in the case of sweet, and most notably, botrytised wines.
The HANNA HI 84100 offers the possibility to test free or total SO2 in all the wines including the red ones, that are difficult to test with manual methods because the color changes are hardly seen. |
 | Titratable Total Acidity Mini Titrator | | |
| Acids occur naturally during the growing of grapes as as part of the fermentation process wines show lower levels of acid when there are hot growing seasons or when the grapes come from hotter regions. In the proper proportion, acids are a desirable trait and give the wine character. The three predominant acids in wine are tartaric, malic, and citric, all of which are intrinsic to the grape. Tartaric acid is the principal acid in grapes and is a component that promotes a crisp flavor and graceful again in wine.
A moderate amount of a wine’s acid comes from malic acid, which contributes to fruitiness, and a small amount comes from citric acid. Wine also contains trace amounts of other acids. The least desirable acid in wine is acetic acid, which, when preset in more than a nominal amount, give swine a sour vinegary aspect.
Total acidity, also called, titratable acidity, is the sum of the fixed and volatile acids. in the United States the total acidity is usually expressed in terms of tartaric acid, even though the other acids are measured. Total acidity directly effects the color and flavor of wine and, depending on the style of the wine, is sought in a perfect balance with the sweet and bitter sensations of other components. Too much acidity makes wine tart and sharp; too little makes wines flat, flabby and uninteresting. Proper acidity in wine is what makes it refreshing and an ideal accompaniment to food.
The proper acid level of a wine varies, with sweeter wines generally requiring somewhat higher levels to retain the proper balance. For dry table wine the acceptable range is usually 0.60 to 0.75%; for sweet wine it’s 0.70 to 0.85%. |

 | CE Mark Definition And Compliance | | |
| All industries make use of electronic instrumentation for their daily operations. The increased use of electronic equipment in many industries means that more instruments are used together and in conjunction with each other, often in a very restricted area. Proximity of equipment has increased the likelihood of interferences between various instruments, as well as the instruments and the environment surrounding them. Improper operation of the equipment may result from these undesired Electro-Magnetic Interferences (EMI). |
 | Electro-Magnetic Interferences (EMI) | | |
| Electro-magnetic interferences are generated by currents which flow into the electronic circuitry of instrumentation. Some Electro-magnetic interferences originate in nature through atomospheric phenomena, such as lightning and static electricity. Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directives define two categories (illustrated on the right): Each category is further sub-divided into:
• Conducted EMI propagated by wires (such as power or connection cables) • Radiated EMI spread through the air
The effects of these Electro-magnetic interferences are the main cause for:
• Incorrect equipment operation and therefore, inaccurate measurements • Damage to the equipment, itself
International Governing bodies have defined the EMI tolerance limits for electronic instruments. The aim is to limit EMI effects and to reach an Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) that permits all electronic devices to operate normally, and in proximity with each other, without having an adverse effect on their operation. |
 | IP 67 Heavy-Duty Construction | | |
| HANNA waterproof meters comply with the IP 67 standards that classify them dust-tight and protected against the effect of temporary immersion in water. This enables the units to operate in the harshest of environments, protected against spills, dust, high humidity and severe weather conditions. This makes them ideal for outdoor measurements and the most severe industrial applications such as mines, food processing, plating, industry, foundries, etc. HANNA waterproof meters are built to last.
This standard describes a system for classifying the degree of protection provided by the enclosure of electrical/electronic equipment. Developed by the European Committee for Electro- Technical Standardization (CENELEC), these standards are designed to numerically rate an electrical product on the level of protection its enclosure provides. By assigning different number codes, the degree of protection of the product can be quickly and easily identified. In the IP 67 code, for example, IP signifies International Protection, the first digit 6 indicates the level of protection from solid objects, and the second digit 7 denotes the level of protection from liquids. See the tables below for the details. |
